Ebonee Davis - the adventures of writing for all

Ebonee Davis is a qualified Educational Director of Operations and holds a B.A degree in Educational Studies and Psychology who writes adventurous stories for all. She lives in Northern Virginia. Below is her story.

equilibreyaum: Ebon, you and I go way back to high school! I’m happy to feature you on my blog. You have a B.A. in Educational Studies and Psychology, what sparked your interest in this field?

Ebonee Davis: I was the "troubled" kid growing up. Looking different from all the kids around me, I needed an outlet from all of the unwanted attention. Most of my teachers just passed me over because they wanted to get rid of me. But once I got to 9th grade, I realized there were a few good teachers who refused to give up on me. This turned me around drastically and it made me understand that I wanted to help as many people as possible. I wanted to be the one who didn't give up on them. So I took the educational route that I believed would allow me the most access to individuals who I could help succeed in life.

e: You've always had such a lively (that's a nice way of putting it..) personality. You focus on other's personalities day-to-day but what make you tick and what excites you?

ED: What makes me tick??? Hmmmmm, I'd say the biggest thing that makes me tick is having my feelings and emotions feeling invalidated. I'm a very emotional being (ha, that's a nice way of putting it) so I choose to express myself often and as I respect that others have emotions I want the same courtesy. If we are being honest! What excites me is the knowledge that life can be anything that you make it. While that is a vague answer, it is honest. There are so many courses for one life and it's up to us to chose which course we take.

e: Have you always wanted to be a writer? What was the first book you ever wrote? How does it differ from your more current books?

ED: In a short answer, yes, I've loved writing since I was in late Elementary school. My latest release, "Exposed" does not differ from my past writings.

e: You primarily write Fiction, is that your favorite genre to read?

ED: Yes, fiction of all sorts are my go to. I enjoy the idea of allowing a good book to take you out of the mundane and allowing you to enter a new reality.

e: What's your writing process like? What are some things you need to have a good writing session?

ED: Music, I need music! Music is like a book really. It gives you a lot of inspiration. But aside that, I need peace. It can be tricky trying to work on my adult books with my toddlers crying in the background. And I need a string support system. I rely on my loved ones to remind me to keep going!

This world tries to beautify everything even if that means taking away the essence of what someone or something is and I try not to.

e: You have 3 different book series. The Adventures of Mae is a children's series that paves the way for young explorers to grow and thrive mentally and social - emotionally. What was it like writing a children's book? How did your own children influence your writing?

ED: The Adventures of Mae comes the easiest to me of all of my series. This is most likely because this is the age group I work most closely with on a daily basis. This series makes me happy as the 3 main characters are actually the toddlers in my life. My niece Macie (M), my daughter Ava Jae (A) and my son Ezra (E) which together makes MAE.

e: The Adventures of KALA features a group of best friends who enjoy exploring together and is aimed at children ages 9-12. What was it like getting in that mindset?

ED: This series is also inspired by children in my life. My niece, Khloey (K), nephew, Avaughn (A)and their two best friends Laila (L) and Alyssa (A) which makes KALA. This series is fun but a bit more intricate than MAE. I've watched these young people grow and explore together so I base my stories on them off of their many adventures together. I also ask their input since it is for kiddos their age.

e: Tell me about the inspiration behind the Exposed series.

ED: Exposed opens up with literally a scene I dreamt. I woke up from a very vivid dream one night and just started writing. It eventually took on a mind if it's own. I'm a huge SVU fan so as you read, you may be able to tell. Almost every character in the book was INSPIRED by someone in my real life. Be sure to note there is a difference between being inspired by someone and actually writing about someone. Haha

e: I notice that the characters in your series represent people of all shapes, colors and shades. How important was that to you?

ED: Diversity is a big thing for me! It's hard in this society for people, especially young people to see themselves accurately represented. This world tries to beautify everything even if that means taking away the essence of what someone or something is and I try not to.

e: Who are your favorite authors? Do you ever find yourself mimicking their writing style?

ED: It is tricky to say who my favorite authors are as I am drawn to books and not who actually wrote them. I actually have my own writing style which you can see when you read my works. But growing up, I loved Zane books even at a young age.

e: What's your favorite book? Anything on your list that you're looking forward to reading?

ED: My favorite books are the Twilight Series. Since I'm currently in writing mode, I do not have anything on my reading list.

e: What’s it like to see your books on Amazon? How did you feel after your first sale?

ED: It's a very exciting feeling to see my books being sold on Amazon especially since Amazon is a very big platform. It was exciting when I noticed my book was selling because I had no idea at first. But I decide to play around with my author account and noticed my royalties were accumulating which meant people were buying my book!

e: Do you have any advice for someone who is interested in writing and exploring their imagination?

ED: Write and do not give up. Sometimes ideas take a while before they form a whole story.

e: How can we find your website and purchase your books?

ED: You can find my website at www.eidaviswrites.com and you can purchase my books at amazon.com/author/eidavis. Also follow me on Facebook and Instagram @eidaviswrites.

e: What's next for you? Do you have plans to write more?

ED: Now that Exposed is done, it is time to write the next book in the series. The Adventures of MAE and the Adventures of KALA will be released this year and the my Unnaturals series is something I'm really excited about but that series takes a lot more time as its scifi Fantasy. Stay tuned!

e: Anything else that you'd like to share?

ED: I'm really excited for everyone to get a chance to read one of my books. My goal is to have something for all kinds of people to enjoy!
